How to Use MWFC Reed Diffuser Base (And Make It Work for Your Business)

How To Make A Reed Diffuser

Reed diffusers are a simple, flame-free way to offer long-lasting fragrance- and they’re a very popular product right now.

Using Midwest Fragrance Company Reed Diffuser Base with our fragrance oils allows you to create both home reed diffusers and car diffusers using the same base and a very similar process. That flexibility makes it easier to expand your offerings while keeping production streamlined.

Watch The Process

If you’re a visual learner, start here. This short video shows exactly how we make reed diffusers using MWFC Reed Diffuser Base.

Recipe, IFRA, and Usage Rates

Before choosing a fragrance, always check its IFRA documentation to confirm the maximum allowed usage rate for Category 10A.

Our recommended recipe starting point is a 4 (base) : 1 (fragrance) ratio, which equals a 20% fragrance load.

A few important things to keep in mind:

  • Not every fragrance is approved for use at 20%
  • Your total fragrance load must stay within IFRA guidelines
  • If a fragrance’s approved usage rate is lower than 20%, you’ll need to adjust your formulation and test accordingly
  • Fragrance loads over 20% can be achieved, but too much fragrance may clog reeds and reduce performance. Always test.

Staying compliant protects both your customers and your business.

Step-by-Step: How To Make A Reed Diffuser

What You'll Need

  • MWFC Reed Diffuser Base
  • Fragrance oil (you can use any, but we recommend MWFC fragrance oils)
  • Scale (highly recommended for accuracy and repeatability)
  • Clean mixing container
  • Stirrer
  • Diffuser vessel
  • Diffuser reeds (6–8 to start)

Step 0: Choose Your Vessel + Check IFRA

Before mixing anything:

  • Decide your diffuser size (For this demonstration, we’re making a 6 oz diffuser.)
  • Confirm the IFRA usage rate for your chosen fragrance
  • Calculate your base-to-fragrance ratios

You can use this calculator to do the math for you: 👉 MWFC Fragrance Oil Calculator

This step helps avoid rework and keeps your testing process clean.

Steps To Creating A Reed Diffuser

Step 1:

For a 6 oz diffuser, weigh 4.8 oz of reed diffuser base into a clean container.

Step 2:

Add 1.2 oz of fragrance oil.

This creates the recommended 4:1 ratio, which equals a 20% fragrance load.

Step 3:

Mix for 30 - 45 seconds, until the mixture is fully blended with no separation.

Step 4:

Carefully pour the mixture into your diffuser bottle.

Step 5:

Insert 6 - 8 diffuser reeds as a starting point.

The exact number may vary based on vessel size and testing results.

Step 6:

Allow the diffuser to cure for 24 - 48 hours before evaluating performance.

Step 7:

Once in use, flipping the reeds about once per week helps maintain consistent diffusion.

Final Notes

Reed diffusers don’t need to be complicated to be effective.

With clear ratios, proper testing, and documentation, they can become a reliable, repeatable product in your lineup.

Take the time to test each fragrance, note your results, and refine your process as needed.
