TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS

Problem: My fragrance oil and room spray base won't bind or there's separation. What can I do?

Solution:  Not all fragrance oils are the same and each one has different ingredients and may interact differently with our room spray base. If you're seeing separation, try adjusting your fragrance percentage - sometimes lowering the amount can actually help the oil and base bind more effectively. Start with a small test batch and see what works best.

* Make sure to check out our MWFC Room Spray Fragrance Load Finder Tool here. This is a great place to start when figuring your fragrance percentage.

Problem: My room spray doesn't smell strong enough.

Solution: This can be due to a number of factors. Some fragrance oils naturally perform better than others in room sprays. It's also possible you've become nose blind, so testing with a friend or family member can give you a fresh perspective.

You may want to try to increase your fragrance load (if applicable) as a first step.

Also, look at your testing procedure and make sure you're spraying in the right amount for the space you're testing in - for example, 3-5 sprays might be great for a small bathroom, but you'll need more for larger rooms.

Finally, checking expectations might be needed. Room sprays are designed to refresh and provide a boost of scent, not to linger all day. A 1-2 hour scent window is typical when anchored on fabric.

Problem: The base smells stronger than my fragrance.

Solution: It's completely normal for the room spray base to have a light odor of its own. If the base scent is overpowering your fragrance, you might not be using enough fragrance oil. Try increasing your load (within IFRA and room spray base limits) and then allow it to cure for 24 hours before testing again.

If the base scent still comes through too strongly, increase fragrance load (if possible), refer back to the previous problem for solutions. It is possible that the fragrance oil may not be compatible with this base.

Problem: The base is making floors slippery.

Solution: This is a common frustration. Since the room spray base is water-based, it can leave surfaces slippery if sprayed directly and in excess. Overloading with fragrance oil can also make this worse.

It's best not to spray more than necessary and we recommend directing sprays onto fabrics like curtains or upholstery whenever possible to help "anchor" the scent (make sure to perform a test on an inconspicuous spot before doing this) and avoid buildup on hard surfaces.

Problem: My spray bottles are leaking during shipping.

Solution: Leakage during shipping is one of those headaches no one wants to deal with. Start by choosing bottles with great reviews - check to see if other makers mention leakage issues. Some folks wrap electrics tape around the neck of the bottle for added security, while others use shrink wrap and a heat gun to seal the lid and neck.

It might take a little trial and error to find the packaging that works best for your needs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have other questions about this product? We have some of the answers to your most frequently asked questions to help you!

Question: Should I shake the bottle before use?

Answer: If the fragrance oil and base have bonded properly, shaking before each use isn't necessary. That said, adding a "shake before use" instruction on your label doesn't hurt and may be helpful depending on the fragrance.

Question: Do I need to cure room spray before testing?

Answer: While you can technically test a spray right after making it, we highly recommend waiting at least 24 hours. This allows the formula to settle and gives you the most accurate idea of how the scent will perform. If you're not happy with the results right away, test again after that window.

Question: Do I need to list ingredients or follow any labeling laws?

Answer: Labeling laws vary depending on your location, so it's best to check with your local guidelines. In general, your room spray labels should include the product name, your business name and address, net weight, instructions for use, and any necessary disclaimers (like avoiding contact with eyes or skin).

Including ingredients is optional in many areas since room sprays aren't considered cosmetic, but transparency can build trust with your customers. Take cues from big box stores to see what labeling practices feel right for your brand.

Question: Do I need insurance to sell room sprays?

Answer: You should definitely check with your insurance agent. Some providers require a separate policy or rider for products like room sprays. It's always better to be safe and make sure your coverage fits your product lineup.

Question: Do I have to use more fragrance oil now that the base can handle a higher percentage?

Answer: Nope! If you were happy with your previous fragrance load, you can keep using it. The updated room spray base just gives you more flexibility to experiment. If you want to try a higher percentage, go for it - but it's totally fine to stick with what already works!

Question: What IFRA category does room spray base fall under?

Answer: Room sprays fall under Category 10B. Always check the IFRA documentation for each fragrance oil you use to ensure your usage rates are safe and compliant.

See a list of all IFRA documentation here

Question: What fragrance oils work best in room sprays?

Answer: Every customer base is different, but some consistent top performers include Fruit Loops, Black Sea, Bum Bum (type), Coastal Waters, Dark Amber Rosewood, Sweater Weather (type), Volcano (type), Fresh Mint + Eucalyptus, and Sunkissed Paradise

Of course, seasonal preferences and regional trends can influence what your customers love most - so don't be afraid to test and see what they love!
