Answering FAQ: Can I use these Liquid Soap Dyes in bath bombs?
Here’s what we found:
Liquid soap dyes ARE an approved colorant for bath bombs but its a bit trickier than that. It comes down to the classification of use for the specific colorants used to make the liquid soap dyes
ALMOST all of the MWFC Liquid Soap Dyes are FDA-supported for external and cosmetic (general) use.
The Orange Liquid Soap Dye, however, is recommended for external use only (not cosmetic general).
Let’s define terms so we know what these mean:
“External Use”= This refers to a product that is applied to or used on the outside of the body. Examples include creams, lotions, and topical ointments, as opposed to drugs that are swallowed or injected. Means cosmetics applied anywhere on the outside of the body, but not areas covered by mucous membranes. And not eyes. Colors for “external use only” may or may not also be approved for the eye area (check the FDA for limitations).
“Cosmetic (general)” = The color additive may be used in any type of cosmetic, including areas covered by mucous membranes (lips, nostrils, ears and genital area); except for those for eye area use. Colors for “cosmetics (general)” may or may not also be approved for the eye area (check for FDA for limitations).
Because of this, we’re recommending that Orange Oasis not be used in bath bombs, to err on the side of caution.
A few best-practice tips for bath bomb creation with Liquid Soap Dyes:
When using dyes in bath bombs, add Polysorbate 80 to help disperse color evenly and minimize staining.
Some makers prefer not to use liquid dyes in bath bombs (as they can slightly increase moisture), while others have had great success — it’s all about personal preference and testing what works best for your formula.
