Vanillin is the ingredient that gives the yummy goodness to many bakery/gourmand fragrances! While all fragrance oils have the potential to cause some discoloration in products, those with higher concentrations of vanillin and ethyl vanillin are more prone to this issue. Soap makers, in particular, look for fragrances with no or low vanillin to assist with planning the look of their finished product. This selection of fragrances contain no vanillin or ethyl vanillin, but always check our soap testing notes and test in small batches with your specific recipe to ensure the end result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between vanilla and vanillin?

A: Vanilla is a natural extract from vanilla orchid pods, boasting a complex blend of compounds for a rich, multi-layered scent.

Vanillin is the main aroma compound found in vanilla. Often synthesized for consistency and affordability, it lacks vanilla’s natural depth and can sometimes cause discoloration in products.

Using our fragrance oils is super simple, and we’re here to guide you! For candles, we recommend adding your fragrance to the melted wax when it’s at the correct temperature (usually around 185°F, but check your wax’s specs). Mix well, pour, and let the magic happen. For soap-making, our oils are perfect for melt-and-pour, cold process, or hot process soaps. Always follow recommended usage rates and do a small test batch to ensure everything works beautifully. Need more tips? Check out our resources—we love helping makers like you!

The recommended fragrance load can vary depending on your project, but here’s a good starting point: for candles, we suggest 6–10% of your total wax weight, depending on your wax type and personal preference. For soaps, always check IFRA usage rates to ensure your oils are skin-safe and used at the right level. When in doubt, start small and adjust until you find your perfect balance!
