How To Reimagine Fragrances To Sell In Any Season

how to reimagine fragrances to sell in any season

If you’re limiting the fragrances you choose for a collection down to a single category or season, you might be holding yourself back more than you realize. Honestly, some of the most unique and memorable collections can be made of fragrances you might not even think to include.

When you learn how to reimagine fragrances, you find out that you can position any fragrance, regardless of its original name or “intended” season, into anything you want it to be.

Collections give you the freedom to reimagine, rename, and retell the story behind a scent in a way that fits your brand and your vision.

Maybe you’re thinking, “There’s no way I can make a summer collection using winter scents.” But you absolutely can, and it’s often easier than you think.

Let's dive into it!

Start Focusing On The Feeling Instead Of The Season

If you want to create a unique seasonal collection that really stands out in a crowd, here is the best advice I could give you…forget the original fragrance name. Forget the scent notes. Forget the description of the fragrance. Instead, focus on how the fragrance makes you feel.

Using this method, you can transform almost any fragrance by giving it a fitting seasonal name that captures the feeling or vibe of the scent instead of the notes.

This tip can be a total game changer for makers who want to create a sell-out seasonal collection.

When you start viewing fragrances in this way, suddenly your scent library opens up in a whole new way.

When brainstorming seasonal scents to introduce in your lineup, our first instinct is to typically go to that season’s category and browse the selection there. But really, the possibilities are endless.

The key is to stop asking, “What is this fragrance supposed to be?” and instead start asking, “What could this fragrance become?”

No more exclusions, no more feeling confined to a handful of fragrances...now you’re creating experiences, telling stories, and making a best-selling collection with no limitations.

Start With The Story, Then Find The Fragrances To Match

There’s another way to approach reimagining a fragrance, and instead of starting with the fragrance, you start with the story you want to tell.

Before even choosing fragrances, start building the collection out and select the main themes, the story you want to tell within the collection, and the names you want to use for the scents included.

For example, let's say you're creating a winter collection called Home for Christmas. This collection will focus on family traditions, cozy comforts, and nostalgia. We'll choose six fragrance names that match the collection's focus first, so let's say we decide to go with: Merry & Bright, Season's Greetings, Christmas Village, Sweet Memories, Holiday Magic, and Warm Wishes.

Now that you've locked in on your collection's theme, the story behind the collection, and the overall feeling you want these fragrances to bring to life, you can go through your fragrance library and find scents that fit for these names, even if they don't necessarily match the 'assigned season'.

Sweet Memories could be a warm gourmand, a soft fruity fragrance, or even a comforting floral. Christmas Village could be a warm bakery scent, a woodsy fragrance, or something that simply reminds you of wandering through a cozy holiday market.

This approach can be especially helpful when you’re working with fragrances that have traditionally been associated with a completely different season. A bright fruity fragrance might not seem like an obvious choice for Holiday Magic, but if it has a cheerful, playful, or sparkling quality, it could perfectly match the vibe- and no one has to know the scent you use is traditionally a summer fragrance.

And this is exactly why non-descriptive names can be so useful when rebranding fragrances. Names like Merry & Bright, Golden Hour, Sunday Morning, After Midnight, or Good Vibes don’t tell your customer exactly what a fragrance is supposed to smell like. They create an image, a mood, or a feeling that the fragrance can then help bring to life.

Once you start approaching your fragrance library this way, you may find yourself reaching for scents you would have previously overlooked.

The goal isn’t to find the fragrance that perfectly matches the season on paper, it’s to find the fragrance that feels right for the story you’re creating.

How One Fragrance Can Tell Four Different Stories

This is probably easier to understand when you see the same fragrance used a few different ways. Let’s use our fragrance, Gingham (type), for an example.

Fragrance description

Sweet clementine and juicy white peach create a fresh, uplifting opening. Blue freesia and soft violet petals bring a light, feminine floral heart, while cashmere musk and soft amber add just enough warmth to keep it from feeling too bright or young.

Top notes: Sweet Clementine, White Peach

Middle notes: Blue Freesia, Violet Petals, Fresh Air

Base notes: Cashmere Musk, Soft Amber

Maybe when you first see that fragrance on our website, you automatically picture it being sold in spring or summer. But take the original name away for a minute.

In a spring collection…

That same fragrance could become something like Sunday Morning. Maybe the collection is about slow mornings, open windows, fresh starts, and those first really nice days where it finally feels like winter is over. Same scent, but now you’re telling a spring story with it.

In a fall collection…

Maybe it becomes Witchy Business. A different label and a different story around it, but you haven’t changed the scent at all. You've just changed the way it fits into a different collection, and suddenly it takes on an entirely different vibe.

And for the holidays…

Maybe now it’s Holiday Magic. Put it into a collection built around celebration, holiday traditions, and the magic of Christmas. It still fits the name perfectly, but with an entirely different story.

That’s really all we’re doing here- taking the same fragrance and looking at it a few different ways. The scent doesn’t change, but the story around it does.

Here's another example to help you see how this can be put into practice: let's use Vintage Christmas.

Fragrance description:

Perfect for those who treasure the magic of the holiday season and the warmth of family togetherness. Highlighted by notes of sweet mandarin, sage, juniper and amber, this fragrance brings to life the essence of a classic Christmas, filled with love, laughter, and timeless traditions.

Top notes: Mandarin, Pomegranate, Black Pepper

Middle notes: Sage, Juniper, Apple

Base notes: Vanilla, Cinnamon, Amber

You probably only consider this fragrance during the holiday season, since Christmas is literally in the name- but there's so much we could do with this versatile scent.

Spring name ideas:
